WELCOME - Day 1
Arrive in San Jose Airport. Spanish Immersion Costa Rica (SICR) staff will welcome you and transport you to meet your homestay family in Atenas, Costa Rica. You will eat dinner and stay the night with your homestay family.
ATENAS - Day 2
Program overview and program curriculum guide. Participants will partake in a map orientation activity to get to know the town of Atenas and explore its seven “barrios.” Visit 100 year-old goldmine and waterfalls with sand carved pools.
PALO VERDE NATIONAL PARK - Day 3
Spend an adventurous day rafting down the Corobici River to Palo Verde National Park. Hike to La Roca outlook and lagoon for bird observations. Spend the night in Palo Verde National Park.
VOLCANO MIRAVALLES - Day 4
Visit Volcano Miravalles - the site of the largest developed geothermal field in Costa Rica. Hike and explore the volcano – featuring thermal hot springs, mud pits and fumaroles and crystallized sulfur. Spend the night in a lodge located at the base of the volcano.
VOLCANO ARENAL - Day 5 and 6
Explore La Fortuna and Volcano Arenal, one of the 10 most active volcanoes in the world. Zip line through the forest during the day and watch the lava flowing down the volcano at night. Visit natural thermal hot springs. Spend the night at an eco-lodge with spectacular volcano views.
SAN JOSE - Day 7
Visit the National Museum and the National Theater. Students will take an in-depth look at modern and historic Costa Rican customs, traditions, religious practices, celebrations, art expressions, and cultural differences. Stay the night in San Jose – enjoy an evening dinner and theater or performance in the capital.
CARARA BIOLOGICAL RESERVE - Day 8
Visit Carara Biological Reserve on the Pacific Coast to hike and see different flora and fauna (scarlett macaws, crocodiles, etc.) Spend afternoon on the beaches of Jaco and Estarillios Oeste (site of 2010 National Surf Championships). Stay the night on the beach and wake-up to an incredible beach sunrise.
PLAYA ESTERILLOS - Day 9
Spend the day enjoying activities on the beach and watching scarlet macaws play in the trees. In the evening we will have farewell activities with typical Costa Rican light foods, Latin dancing or karaoke, and student’s acceptance of certificates of program completion. Stay the night in a quaint and relaxing lodge in Atenas.
